Cleaning the Westfalia luggage rack |

The front luggage rack has two drain holes on either side. Water flows into these holes and then leaks out under the rubber seal on the luggage rack.
Unfortunately the holes also will fill with leaves, twigs, and dirt. A periodic cleaning is recommended.
To remove the luggage rack, unscrew the four flat head bolts being careful not to ruin the paint on them. Next, raise the camper top and remove the four bolts running along the top of the van. At this point you should be able to lift off the fiberglass luggage rack.
Clean the top under the luggage rack, being careful not to get camper canvas wet. To replace the luggage rack, simply reverse the removal process. This might also be a good time to replace the small seal that goes around the bottom edge of the luggage rack.
This is a forgotten spot on VW campers but it really requires cleaning, especially when the van has sat outdoors under a tree for years. Have fun....
Safety notes
Use a small step or step ladder to remove screws. Use two people to lift the rack from the van. (One can do it but anything can happen.)
