Adding rear cupboard doors

by Mike Curran

Going from our 1970 Westfalia to the '89 we missed having more cupboard doors, so were able to get some at an autowreckers and cut out holes in the panels for doors below the bench seat / bed for shoes, leveling boards, etc., and in the rear for better access and use of the large clothes / bedding cuboard (photo that also shows our Hydroflame furnace installation in the lower cupboard by the fridge - second battery and solar controller is also in that area). In the rear area, we reworked some old shelving material to make another set of shelves, including one behind the mirror closet that folds up and down if we have a large pack in there that needs more height.

When we are travelling, the bedding is set up on the rear of the bed so we can store a lot of climbing and biking gear, etc. in the main large compartment. The panels were cut with a jig saw, then sized to fit the hinges, sealed with weldbond glue to prevent delamination / chipping, and painted a grey colour to match the plastic in other cupboards, which is harder to fit.
