There are no exterior features to distinguish an '87 from the '86 model year. The 1987 has carryover features from 1986 including:
- 2 Black plastic front grills (common to 1986-1991)
- Chromed steel bumpers
- Rectangular primary headlights, seperate square high beam lights (common to 1986-1991)
- "Volkswagen" with VW logo on left side of rear hatch
The 1987½ Wolfsburg Edition was the first Vanagon with the aero styled urethane covered bumpers. These bumpers are metalic grey and there are no matching rocker panels. This model also has body colored rear view mirrors and a new ride height lowered by 1.2".
