Shay and I spent a little time in Tikal visiting the
pyramids, headed off to Belize.
In Belize, we found that a dive trip to the reef would
be quite expensive and we headed on to the Yucatan.
We stopped for a break at Cenote Azul, one of the
famous bottomless holes of the Yucatan and Belize. It
was the most delicious water for swimming we have had
on the entire trip. The temperature was perfect and
there was a diving/jumping platform about 20 feet off
the ground. Shay jumped in about 20 times. (My heart
stopped leaping after his second jump.) We liked it
so much we stayed all day and spent the night in a
campground across the street.
There is a wonderful restaurant right on the Cenote so
we went back there for breakfast and one last dip in
the water. While we sat there, the biting flies
attacked me. I already quite a few bites from Tikal
but this was the worst of the entire trip. I counted
25 bites on my right leg alone. Since they also got
my feet, I found wearing my shoes and walking very
difficult. We stumbled on to Akumal.
Ahhhh. Akumal. Wonderful. We stayed in a hotel
right on the beach (Half Moon Bay). You can swim
right up to the reef for snorkeling, the water is
crystal clear and the beaches are not crowded. There
was a dive shop right next to the hotel and Shay
finally got to dive! He did 2 one hour dives the
first day and was scheduled for 2 more the next day.
Then he stubbed his toe on the beach so badly that it
swelled up and he couldn't wear his flippers!
Frankly, this was pretty much the straw that broke the
camels back. As you know, we were already worn out.
We decided to head for home.
We drove and slept for a few days and are now in
College Station, Texas. Shay is home and I will be
heading to Louisiana tomorrow for a visit with my
mother and sisters.
It's been a great trip. Thank you all for caring
about us. When I get home, I will sort through all of
my digital pictures and try to organize something for
Ron to add to the website, maybe filling in some of
the blanks. I've found it very difficult to keep up
with a travelogue while driving 31,000 miles. I still
have a few more miles before I reach California. If
anything interesting turns up, I'll write.
Hasta la vista.
